F1 Tech for F1 Drivers

Leclerc and Hamilton are teammates at Scuderia Ferrari. The latter made the shock move to Italy after claiming six titles with Mercedes-AMG F1. Some teams, such as Ferrari, have road cars within their portfolio that the race drivers occasionally get to play with.

The Ferrari F80 is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine that is aided by three electric motors. The turbocharger technology is borrowed straight from F1. An electric motor sits between the turbine and compressor of each turbo that allows for instantaneous response from low down in the rev range.

The 3,0-litre V6, which revs to 9 200 r/min, alone produces 662 kW and a massive 850 N.m of torque. Total system power is 883 kW, which makes it the most powerful Ferrari road car to ever go on sale. Ferrari says the F80 can blitz the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 2,15 seconds. It blasts from rest to 200 in 5,75 seconds and has a top speed of 350 km/h.

Having a Laugh

Leclerc and Hamilton recently met at Ferrari’s own circuit, known as Pista di Fiorano, to get better acquainted with the F80. Hamilton has already stated that he’d like to work with Ferrari to create a modern-day F40, perhaps an F44… which harks back to the legendary supercar.

Until then, the Brit will have to ‘make do’ with a Ferrari F80. Leclerc already has one on order. Watch as he and Leclerc thrash the hypercar around Fiorano. Hamilton seems a much better passenger than Leclerc, who seems quite startled by his seven-times F1 champion teammate’s driving.
