Hatches

The bread and butter of VW’s sales success locally, the Polo will boast a new look when it debuts in the first quarter of the new year. We covered the revisions to the small hatchback in this post. As is traditional the Polo range will be headed up by the GTI derivative. Still, the turbocharged hot hatch with dual-clutch transmission is a firm favourite of the boy-racer brigade.

Following the Polo in quarter two will be the apex Golf variant, the Golf R. The all-wheel-drive R will slot in above the GTI as the second Mk8 derivative to go on sale in SA. True to form the latest R is powered by a 235 kW/400 N.m 2,0-litre turbocharged engine that is mated to an automated transmission. More info in our original Golf R story here.

SUVs

If you think a Golf R is too small for your current needs then there is the Tiguan R which also debuts around the same time of year. The mid-size SUV has the same drivetrain ie 2,0-turbo AWD mated to a dual-clutch transmission.

Alternatively, there’s an even larger option for those who require more seats in the shape of the facelifted Tiguan Allspace. The largest member of the Tiguan line-up has seating for seven. A facelifted T-Roc (as we reviewed here) will also be on the local listings in the second quarter of 2022.

Completely new for the SA market is the Taigo. This is a more swoopy version of the T-Cross, which we already have locally, with a coupe-esque roofline. The FWD-only Taigo range should closely mirror that of the T-Cross when it goes on sale in Q2.

All-new

Two brand new models will make their international debuts in 2022. The first is the new Polo Sedan, which will go on sale locally in the third quarter.

The other, which may be of more interest to locals, is the all-new VW Amarok. We already know that the second generation of VW’s pick-up will be based on the new Ford Ranger, though with its own distinct appearance. Production of both models will take place right here at Ford’s Silverton manufacturing facility for export to the world.
