Volvo’s transition to a full electric range of offerings is taking place at a rapid pace, more so than any other legacy brand. The automaker just increased its pure-EV line-up with the addition of the Volvo EX30 Cross Country.

We launched our first Cross Country car over 25 years ago, and this concept of durable and all-weather cars is core to the Volvo brand. In Sweden we face harsh winters, but we also like to make the most of them by getting out and exploring our amazing nature, even when it’s minus 20 Celsius outside. That’s why we want to deliver a fully rounded experience, not simply a car, to our EX30 Cross Country customers
– Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars’ CEO.

A Step Up

As you may have guessed, the Volvo EX30 Cross Country is based on the already popular EX30. The EX30 was the leading battery electric vehicle (BEV) sold in SA, with just over 400 sold here in 2024. Just shy of 100 000 units of the EX30 were sold around the world in the same year. The Volvo EX30 Cross Country uses the same base and powertrain. That is to say it has two motors, one per axle, which makes it all-wheel-drive. We expect it will have the 315 kW/543 N.m on tap via a single-speed transmission. Volvo says its latest charge has a range of up to 427 km.

Rugged Looks

The main areas of differentiation between the two derivatives is the more rugged appearance. The CC has been raised for an elevated ride height. It also has special, bigger wheels, with the option of an 18-inch all-terrain tyres. Ride height aside, there are also darkened body panels on the front and rear of the car. The front piece features a unique piece of artwork showing the topography of the Kebnekaise mountain range in Arctic Sweden. Chunky front and rear skidplates as well as wheelarch extensions complete the look.
