It has been a week of performance car unveils. It started with the Kimera K39, which was followed by news of the rejuvenated Ford RS200. Not to forget the menacing Aston Martin Valiant and the brand new, hybrid BMW M5. With all that in mind it was easy to see why the updated Golf R slid in unnoticed.

More Power

Big news is that the updated VW Golf R boasts more power. Its turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine now produces 245 kW. That’s a 10 kW increase Torque increases as well to 420 N.m. As a result the hot hatch can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4,6 seconds, a 0,2-second improvement. Channeling all that power to the road is Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, which now features enhanced torque vectoring capabilities for improved cornering stability and agility. Buyers can choose between a standard top speed of 250 km/h or opt for the Performance Package, which raises it to 270 km/h.

New Appearance

Visually, the updated VW Golf R sports a more aggressive and modern appearance. This includes a revised front end featuring a new LED lighting signature that connects the headlights across the entire width of the grille. The front bumper has also been redesigned with larger air intakes to feed the engine. At the rear, the Golf R boasts new LED taillights and a reworked diffuser with quad exhaust tips, further emphasising its performance credentials. Buyers can also opt for the Black Edition, which adds a host of dark exterior accents for a stealthier, more menacing look.

Inside, there has been a technology upgrade, with a new 12,9-inch infotainment touchscreen taking centre stage. This system integrates Volkswagen’s latest software, including AI-powered voice controls and the ability to access ChatGPT. We reached out to VW SA to obtain a potential intro date for the local market. Its representative responded: The plans for the local market introduction are still under discussion and added (Golf) R and GTI are important for the VW brand in SA. Our team will do everything to get it here.
