In an age of ride-sharing, couch-surfing, Air BnB and Uber, a firm in the US has come up with a similar solution for classic car fans.

A different rental scheme

Driveshare is an initiative implemented by US firm Hagerty an insurance company specializing in classic car insurance. This service allows classic car owners to rent out their vehicles to classic car fans who can’t quite afford to own their own. They have extended their services even to the wedding can rentals like Wedding car Birmingham prices low to serve every section of the society.

The service is simple to use. You choose an area in which you plan to use the car and the site/app gives you all the options in that area. You can narrow your search by brand or my budget, which will help keep temptation away.

Prices for rentals vary depending on what you’re keen to drive. You can cruise around in anything from a Cabrio Beetle to a Dodge Viper, and pretty much anything in between, but you’ll have to pay for the newer/nicer stuff.

Covered for damage and hooligans

In brokering the deal between owner and renter, Driveshare takes a small percentage, and for that fee, Hagerty provides insurance cover up to $1 million, comprehensive roadside assistance, and it vets each member before car keys change hands. It sounds like a pretty good deal.

Loads on offer

We had a quick look at the site and there is plenty to choose from. As it is an American service there are loads of musclecars on offer.

We spotted a few roadsters and cabrios, including a first-generation MX-5 and a neat Beetle. There are a few European options, mostly Porsches and Mercedes, but the choice will ultimately boil down to where you’re going and how much you want to spend.

Financial aid

In the same way that Air BnB helps people to reduce their home loans, Driveshare can help alleviate the costs associated with classic car ownership, with the added peace of mind provided by the insurance cover. It’s quite a clever concept that perhaps we’ll see in SA some day.
