Mechatronik is well known in classic Mercedes circles. The German firm is renowned for its meticulous restoration work applied to, usually, older cars from Stuttgart. More recently it has been producing restomods under its ‘new tech series’ umbrella. The latest may just be its coolest yet. Say hello to the Mechatronik M SEC.

’80s cool

The Mercedes-Benz SEC range (code C126) is one of the most bad-@$$ coupes of the 1980s. It was so cool that it was often the ride of choice for gangsters in movies and TV shows from the era. Time has not diluted its appeal and cars in good nick fetch top dollar. We aren’t quite sure what Mechatronik charges for its restomod, but reports suggest that all 30 earmarked for production are already sold.

Ground-up rebuild

Customers are asked to deliver a donor car to the German firm. The car is then completely stripped, dipped then rebuilt from the ground up. The underpinnings include Öhlins dampers at all four corners with bespoke springs. The company’s website suggest the large coupe is at home on a track as it is on the autobahn.

Rolling stock consists of 19-inch alloys that mimic the famous monoblocks, or period-correct crossspokes, with a hint of aero disc on the outer edge. The Brembo braking system of the M SEC consists of two-piece brake discs with a diameter of 360 mm on the front axle and 330 mm discs on the rear.

Wide carbon body

The classic Bruno Sacco shape has been retained. However, Mechatronik has given it a touch more aggro recalling the legendary AMG widebody cars of the 1980s. Front and rear fenders have therefore been widened a touch. The rear fenders are still steel. However, the front pair are made from carbon-fibre. The same stuff was chosen for both bumpers, skirts and spoiler. The final bit of modernisation is LED tech used for the lights.

AMG power

The biggest change takes place under the bonnet. Mechatronik has chosen a tried and trust AMG powertrain for its restomod. The M156 motor is well known from various applications, most notably the various versions of the (W204) C63. Power from the 6,2-litre V8 has been set at 368 kW (an even 500 hp) with 630 N.m of torque. Merc’s seven-speed Speedshift transmission sends power to a limited slip differential mounted between the rear wheels.

Two flavours

Mechatronik is offering two version of the refreshed coupe to buyers. The M SEC weighs 1 712 kg. As a result it takes 4,2 seconds to 100 km/h and is limited to 250 km/h. A sportier GT-Package ditches the rear seats, which helps bring its mass down to 1 624 kg. It shaves 0,2 seconds off the benchmark sprint, and adds 30 km/h to its top speed. It also boasts 390 mm front rotors.

The ‘regular’ version has four seats from the original SEC, but these will be retrimmed as per buyer tastes. There are also a host of steering designs to choose from. The GT-Package has deep-set carbon-backed Recaros. Both cars have an instrument cluster than features a new digital display replacing the original clock.

In addition there is a retro-looking, but high-tech Blaupunkt radio. It features Bluetooth for audio streaming and hands-free calling as well as a USB port. Sounds are delivered by a 1 560 W audio system that boasts no fewer than three subwoofers.
