A few months ago Ford announced that it would be getting in on the restomod game (original article here). Ford enlisted the services of Boreham Motorworks to go down this road. Today, the Ford Escort Mk1 RS Continumod was unvelied. Well, it’s a bit more than a restomod, as the name suggests. According to the press material Continumod (noun): A blueprint-accurate, period-sympathetic vehicle built new—no donor car, just an authentic continuation with approved chassis numbers from the original manufacturer. This means they are built to the exact schematics from Ford. 150 Ford fanatics will be able to buy these ‘brand new’ Mk1s. Oh, and if you are wondering, that’ll set you back about R6,7m before import duties and taxes.

Brand New
Boreham requires no donor vehicle to build the Ford Escort Mk1 RS Continumod. Each car will be built from the ground up using modern materials and advanced manufacturing techniques. The modern-day Ford Escort Mk1 RS all-steel body is reinforced with additional bracing. Boreham is targeting an 800 kg mass. As a result the bonnet, boot lid and interior bits are made from carbon fibre.
In keeping with tradition, Boreham will offer the Mk1 RS with a period correct twin-cam engine. This newer engine has been increased in size to 1 845 cm3. The engine features fuel injection and develops 136 kW. A four-speed manual Ford straight cut transmission sends power to the rear wheels. Additionally, Ford has developed a special engine for those who want something truly special. The new 2,1-litre billet engine can rev to 10 000 r/min. In the process is develops 221 kW of power. The engine benefits from forged steel conrods and a billet crankshaft. The engine breathes through a bespoke titanium exhaust system. A five-speed dogleg gearbox features short gear ratios.

True to the Original
MacPherson front struts and an all-new lightweight, aluminium and titanium fully floating rear axle stay true to the Escort’s heritage. A limited-slip differential and coilover dampers are in place to control body movement. There is no power steering, no ABS, no traction control and no brake servo to ensure peak analogue driving thrills. The Ford Escort Mk1 RS Continumod rides on 15-inch four-spoke wheels.
