The world of hypercars is full of desirable machines. Machines that boast mind-blowing power outputs and outlandish top speeds. However most automakers are constrained by the need to produce road-legal cars. But what would the same manufacturers be capable of if there were no restrictions? That’s exactly how the Bugatti Bolide was born.

We asked ourselves how we could realize the mighty W16 engine as a technical symbol of the brand in its purest form – with solely four wheels, engine, gearbox, steering wheel and, as the only luxury, two seats.” said Stephan Winkelmann, the president of Bugatti.

What started as a concept will become a production reality as Bugatti will produce 40 units for a few, very lucky owners.

Five Facts About The Bugatti Bolide

  1. The Bugatti Bolide is powered by an 8,0-litre W16. The quad-turbocharged engine makes peak power of 1 178 kW and 1 600 N.m of torque. The car weighs about the same as a hot hatch at 1 450 kg.
  2. Overall height of the Bolide is 995 mm, which is the same height as the historic Bugatti Type 35. Incidentally it is also 22 cm lower than a Chiron. (Watch a Chiron race a Formula One car at this link.)
  3. The Bolide was heavily inspired by the world of motorsport, especially by LMP1 racecars. Every part of the body is functional is terms of smoothing airflow and generating downforce. It has a full, racecar-derived in-board suspension set-up. It rides on full-slick Michelin tyres fitted to centre-lock wheels.
  4. The track-only model is said to blast to from zero to 100 km/h in a searing 2,17 seconds and from 0-200 km/h in an F1-rivalling 4,36. Bugatti also said the concept has a top speed of over 500 km/h.
  5. Bugatti’s simulations show the Bolide will take 3 min 07,1 sec to complete a lap of the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit and 5 min 23,1 sec to get around the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
