Earlier today we brought you pics and info on the revised BMW 5 Series (click here for that story). Well, the Bavarians counterparts over in Stuttgart have also been busy of late as we are also presented with the facelifted Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabrio.

New face

The facelifted Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabrio follow on from the presentation of the sedan and wagon (not available in SA) earlier this year. Now it’s the turn of the two-door versions of the E-Class family. The most noticeable changes to the two derivatives are the newly shaped grille and headlamp design. The sportier AMG 53 variants feature Mercedes’ ‘Panamericana’ grille, instead of the standard diamond finish; the former has 12 vertical slats. Other touches that differentiate the AMG are four round exhaust finishers, a lip spoiler atop the boot and bespoke 19-inch wheels.

Changes inside

New upholstery, trim, and steering wheel option are part and parcel of the changes undertaken inside. Both Coupe and Cabriolet derivatives get the Mercedes-Benz latest MBUX infotainment system as standard. A 12,3-inch central touchscreen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, takes care of infotainment duties. Vital driving info is relayed to the driver through a digital instrument cluster of the same size.  Occupants can interact with the system through a new touchpad infotainment controller. The driver can control the MBUX through a set of capacitive buttons on the steering wheel and/or via voice command.

Engine changes

AMG variants still retain the inline-six that is fitted to all cars that carry the E53 badge. The turbocharged motor with an electrical boost component is good for 320 kW and 520 N.m of torque. We were impressed with the powerplant when we experience it behind the wheel of the CLS53 last year (driving review at this link). Mercedes has dropped the 3,0-litre V6 that used to be found in the E450. It is now also fitted with a turbocharged 3,0-litre inline-six engine with EQ Boost. In this guise it is good for 269 kW and 500 N.m of torque. In both versions power is channelled via a nine-speed automatic transmission.
