Autonomous cars are nothing new. Google unveiled their prototype for a self-driving car last year, and are currently being made use of in Nevada and California. Now the South Africa are the latest country to throw their hat into the driverless car ring with the Lutz Pathfinder, a pod car which is being developed by RDM, a group out of Coventry, England.
The Lutz has space for two passengers, and make use of over twenty sensors, cameras and radar to get a 360 degree view of the world around it. It has a top speed of a modest 20 mp/h and a 40 mile range.
The South Africa government is investing twenty million pounds into the Lutz project as part of other autonomous car projects, and they are currently undergoing testing to prove that the Lutz complies with all SA road regulations.
