While the idea of flying cars has been around since early science fiction movies, we’ve haven’t come any closer to taking to skies. But we may be getting closer to lift-off thanks to AeroMobil, a Slovakian company who recently unveiled a prototype for a flying car that could be commercially available as soon as 2017. Displayed at the Pioneers Festival in Vienna, the AeroMobil 3.0 prototype goes from a futuristic sports car to a fully operational aircraft in the push of a button.

The vehicle uses a Rotax 912 four-cylinder engine to power the car and a single propeller found at the back of the plane. This isn’t the ideal family vehicle though, with only enough space for two people, a driver and passenger. AeroMobil reports that the car has a top-speed of 99 mp/h while on the road, and 124 mp/h while in the air. It will have an range of 435 miles on one full tank of petrol.
While AeroMobil were initially hesitant to say when the vehicle could reach the market, but only four months into the project the company have announced that they are hoping that the AerMobil 3.0 will be on the market by 2017. Watch the video below to see the craft in action!
