The VW Golf has been a staple of the SA car market since the Mk1 was introduced here over forty years ago. Many South Africans learned to drive or simply owned a Golf at some point in their lives. VW SA made the bold choice to introduce the Mk8 VW Golf only in GTI and R guises. A decision that left many people scratching their heads. Well now a regular Mk8 VW Golf 1,4 TSI will be added to the line-up.

Change of Heart
VW SA seems to have had a change of heart as a few derivatives of the 1,4 TSI will go on sale locally in a matter of weeks. The announcement was made at an event held at the automaker’s production facility in the Eastern Cape. VW SA has selected just one powertrain, from the various options available abroad, to add to the existing line-up. This is a 1,4-litre petrol engine that is mated with an eight-speed automated transmission. The turbocharged unit offers 110 kW of power and 250 N.m of torque, all of it delivered to the front wheels.

Four Flavours
All VW Golf 1,4 TSI variants will have an illuminated front logo and new alloy wheel designs. Standard features will include the company’s new infotainment system. The opening salvo in the expanded range will be called Life. A step up is the racier R-line. Both of these derivatives have ‘+’ options which, presumably, adds more standard features to the list price.
