There was single-seat racing at the Laguna Seca Raceway this past weekend. One of the most memorable moments over the weekend was undoubtedly the sight of Reece Gold’s Indy NXT car as it flew down the famous corkscrew.

Stepping Stone

Indy NXT (pr: next) is the final stepping stone on the way to the top-flight Indy series. Think of it as the US’s version of F2. As a result the series often races at the same tracks as Indy on the same weekends. There are a few recognisable names in the series, including Brazilian Caio Collet who is a former member of the Alpine Academy. Three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick is another.

Reece Gold was battling with Jacob Abel during the second Indy NXT race of the weekend. The pair were fighting for the final spot on the podium when Abel made a late lunge up the inside of Gold. As a result the pair collided and the impact sent Gold wide into the gravel. Gold’s car made a spectacular leap as it dropped down the decline at the famous Corkscrew. You can see the great, multi-angle footage below. His car suspension was damaged in the incident forcing him to retire immediately. Abel was given a drive-through penalty for his involvement in the crash.
