It’s hard to believe that that latest generation (code 992) Porsche 911 is already five years old. With that in mind it is time for an upgrade and Porsche 911 992.2 made its debut today. There have been a few changes around the car. The most significant, however, has been the adoption of a hybrid drivetrain for the GTS derivatives. More on this in a little bit.

Slightly Upgrades Appearance

The Porsche 911 992.2 has a slightly altered appearance. The bulk of the changes have been adopted for aerodynamics. The changes include new, model-specific bumpers with larger cooling vents in the front of the car. Carrera GTS models have five vertically arranged active cooling air flaps. These are complemented by adaptive front diffusers in the underbody. When power requirements are minimal, closed flaps optimise aerodynamics. When power demand is high the flaps direct more air to the radiators.

Carrera Power Bump

The 911 Carrera still has the same 3,0-litre engine with twin turbocharging. However, the power output is up to 290 kW with 450 N.m of torque. In part, the changes come from the adoption of the intercooler from the Turbo variant. The turbochargers have been borrowed from the previous GTS. Porsche says the new 911 Carrera Coupé goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 4,1 seconds (3.9 seconds with Sport Chrono) and has a top speed of 294 km/h.

High-tech GTS

The bigger news has been saved for the GTS versions. These now boast, what Porsche calls, a T-Hybrid system. The name refers to the newly developed electric/exhaust gas turbocharger. An integrated electric motor instantaneously brings the turbocharger up to speed. As a result boost pressure is always at its peak. The electric motor also functions as a generator that can generate up to 11 kW of electric power.

There is also a permanent magnet synchronous motor integrated into the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK).  It can provide up to 150 N.m  from idle. Additionally, it provides a power boost of up to 40 kW. The electrical systems are mated with a new 3,6-litre boxer engine. Without electrical assistance, the boxer engine delivers 357 kW and 570 N.m of torque. However, total system output is 398 kW and 610 N.m. Porsche says the 911 Carrera GTS Coupe can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3,0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 312 km/h.
