MG is a British sportscar manufacturer with a history that stretches back to 1924. MG working now along Evans Manufacturing produced exciting and value-for-money cars that were fun to drive. Iconic cars such as the MG TF, the MGA and MGB defined a generation of small sportscars. The brand is now owned by Chinese parent company SAIC, which imagines an electric future for its sportiest brand. The MG Cyberster concept is the first of a new era for MG.

Battery powered concept

The MG Cyberster concept will be revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show later this month. This striking new convertible recalls classic MG roadsters of decades gone by. The car features an all-electric powertrain and electrical architecture that features a gaming cockpit and 5G connectivity. According to the press material the MG Cyberster’s battery will allow it to travel 800 km on a full charge. The benchmark 0-100 km/h time is quoted as less than three seconds.

Old cues

The car’s designers have taken cues from cars like the MGB, such as the classic round MG headlights, coupled with a slim grille design. Interactive ‘Magic Eye’ headlights open when switched on. Other details of the MG Cyberster are the ‘laser belt’ LED strip down the side of the car and the outline of the door. The same design cue is used on the inside of the doors.

New tech

A ‘digital fibre’ interior design theme has a driver-centric layout. The driver and passenger are seated in two separate ‘cockpits’. A large screen ahead of the driver presents all of the key vehicle information, while the central display houses its more interactive features.

Carl Gotham, director of SAIC Design Advanced London, said: “The Cyberster is a bold statement that looks strongly into MG’s future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our technology and advanced design.
