A few months ago Kia previewed a new small SUV in the shape of a show car. That concept has since been approved for production in the shape of the Sonet. Today, Kia Sonet design sketches were released by Kia, giving us the clearest idea of the newcomer’s appearance. Good news for SA buyers is that the Sonet will be introduced into the local market soon after it makes its debut, which is due to take place in a matter of days.

A new segment

Kia already launched one impressive small SUV this year called the Seltos (read our launch report here). The newcomer slots in below the Seltos as a smaller option for those who don’t require as much space. These Kia Sonet design sketches show a dynamic and stylish prospect aimed at the young. Signature Kia design traits include the brand’s ‘tiger nose’ grille, with a three-dimensional geometric grille mesh inspired by Indian architecture. Distinctive LED headlamps give it a unique and rugged appearance. There has been no word in terms of powertrains. If we had to guess we’d say that the Sonet will have the same options as the Hyundai Venue (read our drive review at this link).

Kia says the interior will be trimmed in high-quality materials. User-friendly features will include a two-layer tray to store mobile devices and other items while driving. In the centre of the facia there is a digital display and instrument cluster. The 10,25-inch HD touchscreen and navigation system has all modern connectivity. Steering wheel-mounted controls allow for ease of use.

In his own words

“We are extremely excited to introduce the new KIA Sonet to the world, a compact SUV with a strong and muscular character found only in much larger vehicles. With this in mind, we have designed this SUV with a uniquely sporty attitude, a confident stance and a dynamic silhouette. Its uncompromising attention to detail and selection of colours and materials could have only been inspired by the great cultural heritage that our designers found all over India,” said Karim Habib, senior vice president and head of Kia global design at Kia Motors Corporation. “We believe the KIA Sonet’s compelling character will hold major appeal for young, aspirational and always-connected customers in India and beyond.”
