After the last generation, it was almost certain that the current M2 would spawn a higher-performance derivative. And here it is, the new BMW M2 CS. BMW gave us a sneak peek of the new M car at the recent Concorso d’Eleganza in Italy a few days ago, but full info was released today. Good news for local BMW fans is that the M2 CS will go on sale in SA next year. We have no indication of price, or the allocation that will make its way to our shores.

More Power

The new BMW M2 CS is, as expected, based on the M2 Coupe, a car that we drove at its national media launch (article here). The Competition Sport version is also powered by a 3,0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged engine. However, power has been ramped up to 390 kW and 650 N.m. These represent increases of 37 kW and 50 N.m. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends all that power to the rear axle. There is no word of a manual option. BMW says that the M2 CS can sprint from rest to 100 km/h in 3,8 seconds and will go on to a top speed of 302 km/h.

Less Mass

BMW has put the M2 on a bit of a diet. As a result the CS weighs 30 kg less than its ‘regular’ sibling. The drop in mass comes from the use of carbon fibre as well as a set of lightweight alloys that measure 19-inches up front and 20 at the rear. Wheels aside, the M2 CS has several design cues to set it apart. These include the carbon-fibre roof and a massive ‘ducktail’ spoiler incorporated into the boot lid. The added pressure of the rear spoiler is balanced by a more pronounced front lip.
