General Motors has just unveiled the Corvette ZR1X, which it bills as an American hypercar. The newest, and most powerful Corvette to ever leave the factory is also a hybrid.
From day one, we designed the mid-engine Corvette architecture with ZR1X in mind. This is the most revolutionary platform in Corvette history, supporting the widest range of American sports cars and delivering world-class performance at every level

Twin-Turbo V8
The Corvette ZR1X is powered by the same LT7 V8 as its ZR1 sibling. The ICE is force fed by twin 76 mm turbochargers. As a result it produces 794 kW and 1 122 N.m of torque. The 5,5-litre flat-plane V8 sends all that power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The ZR1X also utilises a hybrid motor on the front axle. Total system output is rated at 933 kW (or 1 250 hp, in old money). There is no physical connection between the two power sources on ZR1X. The car does not need to be plugged-in as charging takes place through regenerative efforts from the front drive unit.
GM says the Corvette ZR1X will blast from rest to 96 km/h (60 mph) in under two seconds. They also say it will demolish the quarter mile in under 9 seconds doing 240 km/h as it crosses the finish line. Remember, this is a car that will be on sale to the general public at their local Corvette dealer. The latest press material doesn’t mention a top speed figure, but the ZR1 has already registered a verified top speed of 375 km/h.
Braking and Handling
The ZR1X has a serious braking system. The front axle has 10-piston clamps on each side and six-piston calipers on the rear wheels. These Alcon items work on carbon-ceramic rotors. GM’s press material says the car can generate up to 1,9G of deceleration under braking.
GM is releasing the ZR1X in two variants and two body styles. Buyers can choose between fixed- and open top body styles. There is also a ‘touring’ version and a ZTK Performance version. The regular version has slightly softer settings for it springs and dampers. These control Michelin PS4 tyres. Drivers who opt for the ZTK option will get higher spring and damper rates. Michelin Cup 2R footwear will deliver quicker lap times. The ZTK also has a high-downforce Carbon Aero package as standard. As a result is has 545 kg of downforce at top speed.
