Low-volume UK carmaker Ariel is well known for the Atom. This is a pared back, no frills performance machine built in the mould of the original Lotus 7. The Atom has a sibling, which has just made it to a second generation. Say hello to the Ariel Nomad 2, the Atom’s mucky brother.

“Making lightweight cars handle compliantly and comfortably on the road is an artform as suspension loads and forces are so low. Making the same car capable of reliably and repeatedly jumping the crest of an off-road hill at more than 100mph takes this to another level. If you then add in loose surfaces, mud, water, and perhaps some ice, you’ll appreciate the extremes that we have dealt with.
“The Nomad 2 is, even to us, a truly remarkable car. As ever, we’ve captured all the elements customers want – road car refinement and reliability, rally car performance and dynamics, plus beach buggy fun! It’s a car that can be driven to the shops, and then around a WRC rally stage. But most importantly, whatever the journey, our guiding principle is that it will put a smile on your face.” Simon Saunders, Ariel Director

Second Generation
The Ariel Nomad 2 is an all-new, from the ground-up reimagining for the original Nomad concept. Major changes include larger diameter main and diagonal tubes than the previous Nomad. As a result only three parts have been carried over from the successor. The newer car has the same exposed outboard suspension, long travel dampers, damage resistant body panels, raised air intake and a hose out interior that made the original such a hit in the UK.
The Nomad 2was designed to let customers explore the full extent of its capabilities. The new model features options of fully selectable driver aids including a engine maps with different power levels, driver adjustable launch and traction control, and an adjustable ABS system. All adjustments can be made on the move, leaving the driver in complete control of settings.

Ford Power
A Ford-sourced 2,3-litre engine powers the Nomad 2. The turbocharged unit produces 228 kW and 518 N.m on its highest setting. A six-speed transmission sends power exclusively to the rear wheels after it passes through a limited-slip diff’. Buyers can choose between manual or sequential options. There is also a hydraulic handbrake – cool. We can’t think of another road car you can buy, as new, with one of those. The Nomad 2 can blast to 100 km/h in about 3,5 seconds and has a top speed of 215 km/h.
